Surprise party online for a dear friend :)

So, since I cannot be in Oregon for my friend Tiffany's birthday celebrations, I figured I would do the next best thing, and throw her a surprise "party" on here :) Pictures came from this wonderful blog I found, giving credit where credit is due :) http://designsbyshay.blogspot.com/2012/03/raise-your-glasses-its-my-birthday.html
The cake
Of course, I'd hand make it. Site unknown, googled it, but couldn't find site.
The tablescapes
The deco
Ok, maybe not THIS grand of a scale, but I loved it :)
Signature Drink: Lavender Martini
Looks so delish, like the Pear Lavender Martini they had at Ruby Tuesdays...yum!
The Gift
Amethyst Earrings <3

Tiffany is the blogstress for Fizzy Party (http://www.fizzyparty.com/ ), which I absolutely adore, almost as much as I do her <3
Just wish we weren't on opposite coasts :(

Hope you had a fabulous birthday Tiff, and hope to get together while in Oregon this summer!!

Confessions of a hostess-a-holic: The How to's of being a hostess

*** This is just for those who don't know the in's and out's of being a host/hostess of a party. If you want me to add things to this, comment below and I'll be glad to share the information***

I learned from the best, so I really didn't need a How-to, on well, how to host a party. Thank the stars I had a mom who was the hostess with the mostess :)  But, not everyone grew up with the fantastic hostess mom I did, so here's a collaboration of tips I've found from various sites to help :)  If I know the source, I list it, if  I don't, I will if someone knows where it came from haha.

Ze la How to's of what to do for party hosting
Decide how many people you're going to have: Deciding who you would like to invite to your party involves much more art than science. There are a variety of factors you should consider when you and/or your spouse sit down to make out a guest list.
The first thing you need to decide is where you'll be holding your party. Will it be a house party or out at another location. The most important thing about this decision is that will tell you whether your guest list needs to be limited by available space. Obviously you want your guests to have fun, and part of that is considering their comfort, seating, and room to roam.
Before you go any further, it's important to set a budget for your party, and then decide whether you want to spend that budget on inexpensive refreshments and food for a lot of people, or more luxe goodies for a select group of friends.
Once those decision have been made, you should consider, based on the type of party you've planned, how much you can manage on your own. If it's a dinner party, are you comfortable cooking and serving a gourmet meal for 15, or does 8 guests seem more manageable? Or, can you afford to hire assistance?
Finally, and many people will say this is the most important factor, you need to consider the personalities of your guests** and who will make good conversation together, or be willing to dance, or participate in whatever activity you've planned. Your guests don't need to know one another, but they should be able to socialize in a mixed group if they don't. And, of course, don't invite friends who get along poorly with one another to the same party - that is unless you intend to make their hostility be the main event. (Borrowed from: http://entertaining.about.com/od/generalpartyplanning/f/guestlist.htm)
**Melly's rule of thumb with guest invites: Invite twice as many as you'd like to come, that way you end up with as many as you'd like to have.**
** Very important, almost more important than how many people you're going to have. Seriously. I've had some parties go south very fast, because of personality clashes. No bueno. :(
<--not a good look at a party, just sayin'.

2.  Don't be afraid to put on invitation RSVP's for people to list allergies.  I still make foods some may be allergic to, because others can eat it, but I usually put little signs on toothpicks with a list of ingredients, so that those that are allergic are well aware.  I do however, call people who've listed allergies to find out if it's an ingested allergy, or even the smell of something will set them off.  If it's a smell allergy as well, I don't make anything with that in it.
3.  Don't be afraid to let people know you didn't personally make something.  Nothing will piss off a guest, than finding out that something you claim to have made,  you actually didn't.  I went to a party once, where the hostess was getting raves for cupcakes she "made",  until a guest said "I'm pretty sure these are from xxx bakery".  The hostess had thrown the bakery box in the garage, where people were allowed to smoke. Party hostess foul in the worst degree.
4.  Be prepared.  I usually have 90% of my party stuff done the day before the party so I'm not overwhelmed.  Veggies can be cut and stored in ziplock bags with water in them, onions can be prechopped for dishes, and cupcakes or cakes can be baked up to three days before and still be presentable, if stored properly.  Why run around like a chicken with your head cut off the day of, if you can avoid it and do it before hand?
How not to look the day of your party.
5.  Ask a guest to be your photographer.  90% of my earlier parties I hosted, You'd never know they were mine, because I was never in the pictures.
6.  It's ok to ask guests to bring food/drink/paper plates/candy/whatever to your party.  Just because you're being the hostess with the mostess, doesn't mean it should cost the mostest either.  People will not be offended by you asking, either, so don't sweat that.
7.  Make sure your party theme is appropriate. This should be a no brainer, right? Well, for some believe it or not, it's a hard task.  If it's an adult party, then it should be just that.  Now don't get me wrong...if you have hired a teen to babysit, that is cool, as long as the babysitter keeps the children out of the area where the adults are at.  I've been shocked a few times, going to parties that are "adult themed" and seeing peoples kids swishing through adults in french maids outfits, or hearing inappropriate language for younger kids ears.  If it's a kids party, I feel, and this is MY personal opinion, it should be 100% kid party.  That means no booze. Sad but true.  I've experienced adults drunk at their own kids birthday parties, and it's not trendy, nor sexy, nor are you going to win parent of the year awards by doing that. Just a thought lol!

I'm sure I'll add to this, it's rather late now, and well, when it's this late, my brain turns to mush. Post below if there is something you'd like to add to this blog, and I will try to update it as we go along :)

Cinco De Mayo! Ole!

With the next major party day approaching, I thought I'd start to google around a bit for party ideas and deco for Cinco De Mayo!!  I spent a lot of time in my 20's going out for Cinco De Mayo, and it was fun, but now, I prefer to do things at peoples homes, or host them myself.  This year, I won't be, because of school, but I will eventually host another one someday :)

Ok, let's get a move on with the deets. (Details) Hee Hee!
Invitations:
This invitation is a good example of what to get for a party. You don't want it to be too plain, yet, you don't want it too over the top either! You can find ones like these at this great site I found: http://www.papertrails.com/store/Fiesta-Grande-Printable-Invitations-by-Glad-Tidings-p-22024.html

Decoration Ideas
These are just too cute, and can be used in a variety of decorative ways. I'll list the ways I'd use them, but first here's the link to find them. http://www.amols.com/catalog/4-mexico-sombrero
I'd use them for:
Tabasco top covers
Place setting name tags
General table decorations
Randomly place them around the house on coffee tables, use wooden skewers to balance them in plants ect.
Mini Sarapes:
These could be used under plates for table settings, or for a fun gift item on the backs of chairs.

Mini Maracas!
These again, can be used in a few different ways: http://www.amols.com/catalog/maracas-pin
Napkin holders: Wrap a bright piece of fabric around the silverware, and secure with these deco-pins
Name Tag holders: Attatch to the name card before you set on the mini-sombreros!
Pin directly to the napkins

Mini Pinatas (Love these!)

These are too friggin cute, and could be placed on the dinner table, side tables, or inter-mingled with food dishes if you're doing it buffet style. Find them here:

These napkins would be fabulous for your Cinco party! Vibrant is what it's all about!
Plates: Make them bright and vibrant as well

***Note here:  If you're going to do vibrant napkins, and plates, I would suggest using a solid color table cloth with vibrant accessories. You don't want to overpower your guests eyes with all the spazzing of color going on lol!***

Ok, on to MY favorite part of parties.....the food and drink!
Cinco De Mayo Tacos:
I'd make a variance of different tacos in Chicken, Beef and These yummy Fish tacos
You could always ask your guests to bring ingredients for the tacos, such as the tortillas, whatever toppings you'd like such as cheese, chopped onion, cilantro, ect., or ask them to bring a side dish such as Rice, Refriend Beans, Salsa or their other favorite mexican side.  You should always offer suggestions, so it makes your evening enjoyable as well, because instead of cooking 85% of the party, you can focus on the fun of having it. Isn't that why we throw parties anyhow? :)
Drinks:
We all know that Margaritas are a given, but what about other types of Cinco related drinks?
I searched a bit, and here's a few I found.
Horchata
This is a traditional drink in Mexico, and the recipe (found here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ingrid-hoffmann/horchata-recipe/index.html ) is non-alcoholic, but I have added vanilla vodka to this recipe and it's fabulous :)
Mayahuel - a change from Margaritas!

Games:
I am not a big game planner at parties for adults.  However, some ideas you could use is:
Mystery Murder Cinco De Mayo Style
Charades - Making the cards people choose from mexican items or people
Cinco De Pictionary- same idea, as charades

Atmosphere:
Set the mood of your theme, with decorations, and music.  A ipod with some mexican music would be great, but you want it to just be that, the music.  It's easier to talk over music alone, than singing as well. At least in my opinion :)  You might have a hispanic store near you, that you can find decorations, music, and food, you just have to explore your options.

Hopefully I didn't ramble too much, and that you got some good information from me on Cinco parties. If not, I'll try the next blog post ;)

This girl likes to party all the time ;) (Que Eddy Murphy song now)

I've been meaning to start this blog for awhile, and since my girlfriend Tiffany has Fizzy Party on Facebook, she's inspired me to do this lil ole blog.  I can't guarantee that I'll post daily, since I am a full time student, but I'm aiming for at least once a week.  If I don't make that, I apologize in advance. :)

Even though Easter has come already, I thought I'd share some cute ideas from various places that I've found and will probably use next year.  As I said, I haven't done much party planning with school monopolizing a bunch of my time, but I fully intend on getting back into the addiction my mother created within me of being a hostess.

Easter Decor:
I am a huge fan of decorating in some way shape or form, as well as having an abundance of food/drinks at a party. Why go to all the trouble of cooking all day, slaving away, and not having a good presentation, right?

The first thing I want to share is this cute carrot idea for Easter from Martha Stewart's website :)

http://www.marthastewart.com/274530/decorating-for-easter/@center/276968/easter#/335075
These are so cute, I will defiantly be making these <3
This next project is also from Martha Stewart's website! She has a ton of great ideas, and if I am having hostess-block, I go here first :)
This Easter Egg Tree is adorable, and can be reused or gifted to a guest who comes to your Easter Festivities! Instructions are available here:

Drinks:
This is one of my favorite drinks, and the recipe includes how to make it child friendly.  It's refreshing and crisp, and oh-so delish :)
Fresh Strawberry Bellini
A recipe from Mario Batalli, Famous Chef

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle prosecco*
  • 2 cups pureed and strained fresh strawberries
  • Special equipment: Blenderstrainer, iced champagne flutes, pitcher and tall "swizzle stirrer" (for the pitcher)

Directions

Place 8 Champagne flutes in the freezer for 20 minutes. Open the prosecco and let it stand in an ice bucket for 5 minutes.
Into a pitcher, pour the 2 cups pureed strawberries. Gently pour in the bottle of prosecco and stir gently to combine. Divide among Champagne flutes and serve.
*For Kid Bellinis, substitute sparkling water for the prosecco.
Another fav of mine is what I call the Chocolate Easter Bunny Martini. Sooooooo good, and is a choc-o-holics dream come true :)
Chocolate Easter Bunny Martini aka Death by Chocolate Martini
made famous by The Neely's, Food Network Stars

Ingredients

  • Cocoa powder, for rimming
  • 2 parts chocolate liqueur, plus more for rimming
  • 1 part vodka
  • 1 part half-and-half

Directions

Add a few tablespoons chocolate liqueur to a small rimmed plate. Add a few tablespoons cocoa powder to another small plate and whisk briefly to break up the lumps. Dip the rim of a martini glass into the liqueur then into the cocoa. Set aside.
Add the chocolate liqueur, vodka, and half-and-half to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake for a good 20 seconds. Pour into rimmed martini glass.

Food:
There are so many good recipes out there, I don't usually have to worry too much about food.  I rely heavily on family recipes, but if I can't find what I'm looking for, I refer to Weight Watchers Magazine, Food Network Magazine, or Food Network.com, none of which have failed me.
I did make these eggs this year, which were fun and fabulous :)
You can find the recipe I used here:

Other than that, my usual fare for Easter dinner consists of the following:
Ham
Deviled Eggs of some kind
Green Bean Casserole
Hot Rolls
Salad
Jello Ambrosia Salad
Roasted Veggies of some kind
Red Velvet Cake

I am always on the look for new ideas both decorative, and food/drink wise. So I'm sure in the future, you'll be seeing things I've found for holidays past (or upcoming) depending on when I find them :)

Hope you enjoyed my first blog entry.
As my favorite cook ever says, Best Dishes, from my kitchen, to yours.
